Reveal, the original Poisonous Poet, is now officially back! Hot on the trail of his two recent viral videos 'Neva Blink' and 'West London', the self described "Gully Irani" releases "Warning" the first full music video from his forthcoming "Seven Shades" Solo EP; set to be released on the 7th of February. Reveal takes a break from the norm as he takes a very introspective look at himself and the events that have formed him.

Complete with unique, stunning, spaced out and trippy visuals, "Warning" is a very personal song, dedicated to Reveal's Father, who was killed in 2003 by a landmine while working as a cameraman in Kurdistan. Reveal reflects on certain lifestyle choices he has made in the aftermath of the tragic circumstances he was faced with and their lasting effects.

The track is produced by Cannes Film Festival Special Jury Nominee, Paris based Iranian composer Mahdyar Aghajani and is definitely not your average run of the mill Hip-Hop.

Make sure you keep an eye out for the 7 track EP "Seven Shades" dropping on the 7th of February...

Peace. This is KRS-One! I'd like to personally thank everyone for their show of support toward the release of the "Just Like That" video. I'm not really a big Internet guy myself, but I had to respond to the enormous amount of love we've experienced since the release of the "Just Like That" video. MAD LION ROCKED IT! However, the best is still yet to come.
As you may know, I often use my talents to edutain my listeners and inspire the international Hip Hop community. 2012 will be no different. I feel sorry for those who already think that I preach too much in rhyme, or that I need to retire. On the contrary, I'm just getting started.
Turning the flame up a little more, my next video presentation "Aztecnical" will deal with the myths of 2012, particularly the December 21st 2012 Mayan Calendar "end date". Too many of our people are being led astray by movies, lectures and hype mostly regarding the celestial calculations of the Mayan Calendar. And while other cultures also predict the same "end date" calculations, it is important to point out that all cosmic alignments, shifts and even changes are occurring RIGHT NOW! The question is, how might this affect Hip Hop worldwide? I believe we are about to finally have our "say" in the world. The key word in the next few upcoming months will be "courage", and true courage comes from living rightly. As an international culture, Hip Hop is poised for a great opportunity; my goal is to get us prepared for it, and fear has no place in our collective future.
I am sending this "Aztecnical" video out in hopes that it sparks discussion and dispels fears. The first verse deals with the actual Mayan calculations themselves and shows how governments and corporate entities of all sorts use the fears of the public to their own economic and global advantages. The second verse deals with the conquest of Cortez over the Mayan People and how it was the Mayans' own cultural beliefs that were used against them to cease their lands and resources. The point being, do not allow hype and your own view of the world to lure you into the hands of those only out to exploit you. BE STRONG! BE COURAGOUS! And yes, Knowledge Reigns Supreme. There It Is,Just Like That.

As many people know, the UK scene is a disjointed and underrepresented world. Even in this Internet age, where you can find the Fitted Capsize of your favourite Technotronic covering Rapper, it’s still extremelydifficult to get even the most basic info on the UK Scene. You could lay thatdown to the lack of investment, cohesion, or media outlets in theearly years, or that there was never “that book”, but that is all in the past now. There are of course people like Disordaand his Suspect Packages, http://heroesofukhiphop.com, Discoscratch and many others, but it’sstill sparse out there. One crew who is extremely under represented is ScientistsOf Sound who between 1992 and 1996 released 3 singles, a 2-piece vinyl and a DJ Evil Dee (Black Moon/ Beatminerz) hosted Mixtape????! Let me just say that againa DJ Evil Dee (Black Moon/ Beatminerz) hosted Mixtape????! In 1996! Anyway, to redressthe balance I met up with two members of the group Scientists Of Sound todiscuss their Futuristic past, and esoteric future as their new incarnation asBurnt Brasse.

This much we know, the main nucleus of Scientists of Soundconsisted of Bam a.k.a. Bob Eskimo, Aqil a.k.a. J-Blast a.k.a. Rylo Steelo,Cherok a.k.a. Doc Holiday and Aybee a.k.a. Strontium God. They worked withproducer Skeff Anslem (“he gets props too”), everyone's favourite UK DJ ShortyBlitz, TY, Fallacy and the lovely Mis-Teeq to name but a few, all the while existing in thepost Music of Life/Kold Sweat UK Independent Label wasteland. Scientists ofSound a.k.a. SCI-4 became knownfor their unique style, by mixing Science Fiction References, Official Boom-Bapand the teachings of Dr Malachi Z York's Ansaarullah Muslim Community. Thinkingabout it now, their sound was probably too forward thinking and original, for the weeded outearly 90's Timbo Era Chorus Rap. But hailing from Willesden North London, theyrepresented a generation of UK Hip-Hoppers that took the attributes of theDiaspora to new heights, and expressed themselves in new forms that representedtheir experience. Now in 2011, Bam (Bob Eskimo) and Aqil (J-Blast/Rylo Steelo) have embarked on an already promisingnew project, recording under the name Burnt Brasse. So keep your eyes to theskies for that! Shucks One: How did you first become exposed to Hip-Hop Culture?

Bam: For me it was through my Young Uncle Peter and cousinGilbert who were DJ’s – they played me the Sugar Hill Gang’s Rappersdelight....I was hooked on rhyming from there.

Aqil: I heard ‘The amazing adventures of Grandmaster Flashon the wheels of steel (circa ’81) and thought WHAAAAAAAAAT!!!!! Rahtid!!!!!!!I need more!!!! Now!!!!!

Did you do other Hip-Hop elements, or was it always MCing?

Bam: Both me and Cherok were B-boys in a group called KnightShockers Crew and bombers on the graff front. We were always rhyming but alsobeatboxed. It was soooooooooo crazy back then cos every kid on the street wasinto hip-hop or reggae or pop music.

Aqil: You HAD to at least try the other elements. Iwas an ok DJ, better at mixing than cutting etc, Graf? Put it this way, I justabout draw stickmen ok, so that was a no-no, but MCing was really it for me.From what I saw, they got the most attention from chicks lol

What was it about the culture that really affected you?

Bam: I loved the vibe the freshness of it all. It was new itwas against conventional music at of its time. It was music and DJing it wasdancing (bboying!) It was Art (Graffiti) – for a young boy growing up this wasas good as it gets.

Aqil: For me, it was creativity. The chance to hear newmusic every single week. That was exciting, going to Bluebirds record shop inEdgware road, getting butterflies when I saw a new Def Jam or Cold chillin’ 12inch. Hearing Melle Mel talk about pissing in the alley, or 2 live crew sayingthey want some pussy, it was amazing, cos it was all revolutionary middle fingerto adults time. Beautiful! Cant beat that feeling mi ah tell yuh!

Aybee a.k.a. Strontium God, Bam a.k.a. Bob Eskimo and Cherok a.k.a. Doc Holiday

How did S.O.S. come about? Were you friends at school, ordid you meet through the Hip-Hop scene?

Bam: Aybee was in a year above me and Cherok at school. Butwe didn’t really know him as such until a friend of ours in a crew we beatboxedfor introduced us to him as a DJ.At that time we really kept the rapping thing to ourselves (me and Cherok thatis) until one day one of the guys in the crew we beatboxed for asked to battleas I said he could improve his style.! The rest is history. People didn’t knowwe were nice like that until we did it. After that Aybee called DJ AA at thetime wanted to form a crew called Magic Wardrobe Productions; we used to recordon his 4-track in his wardrobe to get the right sound in the Mic. MAAAAD IKNOW. We then called ourselves Scientists of Sound because we had incrediblysparse equipment but could create some sick sounds and beats!

Aqil: I met them as we were all Ansaarullah Muslimsstudying under the great Doc York (FREE DR YORK!!!!) who was then known as AsSayyid Al Imam Isa Al Haadi Al Mahdi and studied under different Masjids, butwas from the same part of town, namely Harlesden. After I did this Likkle Dissong that Westwood championed, things were starting to happen for me, andas we were brothers of the samemind, I thought that we should form like Voltron and see what happens, as wehad done so many demo’s together.

For men growing up in the U.K., how important was it for youto express your own experience?

Bam: It was paramount as a lot of the youth programmes hadclosed there was drugs getting into every neighbourhood – people were notsaying ‘oh yeah lets help these young black men become a success!’ there was nomyspace or facebook or youtube or twitter! To be heard you had to come with it!Bring da noise!

Aqil: Plus nobody had repped our ends at all. Although youhad Jive’s Wee Pappa Girl Rappers (member them?) from Willesden, it weren’t theREAL. So determination helped us to be heard. I remember going on stage andburning pictures of sir Paul Condon, the police commissioner at the time.Imagine doing that now. You’d be up on the terrorist 28 day rule. No one hasthe education or the cohones to do that now.

"Raise The Flag!"

You had some pretty serious concepts in your lyrics and titles, could you break some of them down? For example what is a Scientist of Sound?

Bam: A Scientist of Sound is a person who manipulates sound to inform, create, deliver a message and changes the consciousness of a person or people. We tried to do this as well as make it interesting for the listener. We also tried to make it fun as well as real HIP HOP as you can get. In terms of subject matter we did try to raise people up to stop feeling alienated to believe in the impossible; to tell them that difference is cool. The whole point of us being aliens and the storyline was to show that you can be different and dope!

How many guys were down with SCI-4 a.k.a.Scientists of Sound

Aqil: There was Zulu King ECHO, Mo Dog, Ty, Shorty Blitz (amazingdeejay, just go see him live for proof), Bloodhoundz, Fallacy, Soldier Queen,4x4 (who later morphed into Mis-Teeq – DONT BLAME US!!!!) Invincible Bullet, DaBani, Haniel, Black Ice, Mat Ckillz, - There were more, but I can’t rememberthem all!! Apologies to y’all...

Who was the US producer you guys were down with, was it Sam Sever?

Bam: Nah man hahahaha! It was Skeff Anslem from The Ummah (A Tribe Called Quest).

Aqil: Also the Beatminerz, who heard our stuff being mixed in another studio, and Evil Dee loved it so much he did the Mixtape for free, not just hosted it. A real coup if you ask me...

What labels were you signed to?

Aqil: Bite IT and Downlow

How did you end up signing with “Bite It” Records?

Bam: This is where J-Blast comes in the frame. He did atrack called ‘To Break Da Dawn’ with a group called 100% Proof. It had somecontroversy attached to it as it was a Dis track aimed at PM Dawn who a lot ofHip Hop people saw as too commercial. J was from around the way and was knownon the underground Hip Hop circuit we also knew him from the Zulu Nation andother places and shows. He was doing his thing but he liked what we were doing.He introduced us to Trevor Jackson who owned Bite It Records a classic label.We really got on with Trevor who really gave us our first chance thus ‘RaiseThe Flag’ was born.

Scientists Of Sound 144 Or Bust "The Replenishing" released in 1996

Your album was called 144 or Bust, where is 144, and what is its significance?

Bam: We took that information from The Book Of Revelation in the Bible. Now lets not get spooky or religious we see all scriptures but this one had a lot of relevance. It’s kinda like saying ‘many are called but few are chosen’. We really felt and to a certain extent still feel that not everyone will get up there and want to affect change in their homes and communities. It’s always the chosen few who will go out of their way to change things for the common good.

Scientists Of Sound - 19th degree

It came out in 1996, during a reasonably quietperiod in U.K. Hip-Hop, yet you seemed to get a lot of attention, especially inthe U.S. and Europe. U.K. acts have as a general rule were always popular incountries like Germany, France and Sweden for example, but not really in theU.S. How did you bridge the gap?

Bam: We had some really good people in the U.S. who just gotwhat we were trying to say! DJ Evil Dee from the Beatminerz really took to usand agreed to mix our Mixtape for us! That was incredible cos at the time noone was connecting like that! Respect to the whole Boot camp Click for theirsupport. Also another Brooklynite The East Flatbush Project they were reallygood with us. Not forgetting Skeff Anselm ‘Gets Props Too!’ for he put somework in the studio! Tom ‘kick em in the groin’ Coyne at Sterling sound NYC! Andnot forgetting The Mighty WU-TANG Clan they really understood the message wehad and the creativity! It was really weird cos over here people were like ‘ohthey aliens’ but everywhere else was like ‘anyone who is alienated form societyis an alien!’. I remember going to France and doing an interview and they gotus. I was working out in Australia and did a radio interview over there andthey got us! It was strange that in the U.K. they kinda didn’t as much.

Aqil: It wasn’t so much that people didn’t get us, it wasthat people were a bit jealous of what they perceived us to have. Plus weweren’t trying to fit in. That was rules of Hip Hop man! Our LP came out justbefore ATLiens (Outkast) Of course their production values etc were far better,but people got them. So it was just a natural anti UK bias towards our own thatwas very prevalent at that time too.

The album was very Sci-Fi inspired, what brought that about?Where you all watching a lot of Star Trek or something hahahah!

Bam: LOL Hahahahaha!!!! We were and are still big sci-fifans. Its kinda crazy watching a Star Trek episode now on your iPAD with touchcapabilities just like Star Trek has been doing for donkey’s years. Or talkingabout Nano technology, which is "now technology". Science Fiction isnow science fact!

What have you guys been up to since the Scientist Of Sounddays? I know that long time Universal Zulu Nation representer Aqil was a part of The Fat Boss magazine and Soul2Soul etc. What's the Rah-Rah?

Bam: Since SOS I have messed with some unknown bands, whichare not worth mentioning from Hip-Hop to Jazz and Rock. I also helped in mycommunity, setting up a radio station as well as mentoring younger artists.Currently I am one half of a group called Burnt Brasse with Aqil and we arealso involved with managing some up and coming artists.

Aqil: I did a lot of things. Became a total hypocrite drugdealer, sold keys of weed, got into trouble, dealt with the karma, worked atSony BMG for a while, made a record with RZA (on his RZA solo CD that came outon Virgin) toured with a lot of US artists, from Busta to Alicia keys to Usherto Diddy to Outkast to Faithless, sound engineered for Roger Troutman on hislast visit to the UK, did a cable TV battle show that never jumped off, workedwith troubled disaffected youth, helped mentor drug and alcohol dependants,travelled to Egypt (before the riots) and a bunch of other things I cantremember. Oh yeah, and I managed Fallacy for a short like leprechaun while. Andget regularly taken up to a ship by aliens from planet RIZQ for debriefingsessions.

Your presently working on the upcoming Burnt Brasseproject, what is the thinking and direction behind that?

Bam: The Burnt Brasse Project is exactly what the words sayalmost like saying Dirty Metal or Dirty Hip-Hop. We are taking the Hip Hopelement like as if it was an element on the periodic table and superheating itwith other elements like Dub, D&B, Rock, Dub-step, Electronica but stillwith a social disposition. We have travelled and seen and heard and are stillinfluenced by soooo much music so we wanted to come with that on this project.

Should the fans expect a 144 Or Bust part 2, or the fullS.O.S. line-up?

Bam: Sorry fans the 144 or Bust part 2 which was going to becalled Reservoir Gods, (Suns of Thunder). that is on a tape in one of my vaultson an island in the Pacific.... one thing for sure it was going to be a beastof an album but it just didn’t happen. The BB project is a completely differentexpression of us as 4 have become 2 like the phonetics of each group.

Being long standing fans of Hip-Hop, what are some of thethings that you think are good about New School Hip-Hop?

Bam: New School in some cases is a bit old School to us in agood way as there are a lot of Electronic elements from a production point ofview. This was like back in the day with Soul Sonic Force, Nucleus, Man Parrish,Egyptian Lover etc. The sounds are old but the raps and position is new. It’scrazy when people go ‘Oh my god they are rapping over a rock or indie rift’when this has been done before. I think sometime some New Schoolers need to digin themselves and bring out something incredibly new! Also where is the DJ????Especially in the U.K.!

What are some of the things that you personally do not sopositive Hip-Hop Culture?

I love the fact that some artists are getting paid what theydeserve and are renown worldwide, but this is the only side we seem to see onTV or online is this domination of wealth again substance. It still leaves therest of music thinking that the Art form of Rap music is a sub-species and notas creative as singing or playing an instrument. Graffiti is now almost afashionable addition to modern art and not a central piece. That’s why we lovepeople like you who bring it!

Aqil: My issue is that there aren’t alternative mainstreamhip-hop views repped in the media. It’s all so 106 and Park-ified now. Sellingout is good. Don’t upset the apple cart kinda ting. There are a lot of peoplewho were 5 years ago, at the forefront of Hip Hop over here, most of them arenot here now. Why? If you make disco hip hop like a lot of people are doing,then you gonna go the way of fast food cartons. In the bin when we done withyou.

As conscious thinkers, what role do you feel Hip-Hop has inpropagating Knowledge of Self, and encouraging a new generation of intelligent beings?

Bam: Hip-hop has the responsibility to be Responsible! Youcannot be in your 30’s or 40’s and be acting like a 16 year old that is justsad! Children look up to their elders and if they see themselves then how canthey progress in life.

Do you feel that there is any place for Consciousness in Rapculture anymore?

Bam: There are still conscious rappers out there who arebringing it Mos Def, Jay Electronica, Talib Kweli, Immortal Technique, IronBrayds. to name but a tidy few. Its like in any musical form you will get thosefew who don’t just talk bubble gum ish.

To “add-on” for some young artists out there, what are someof the pitfalls that you might have fallen victim to that they should look outfor?

Bam:

1) Knowwhat you are signing. Get a GREAT not just good music lawyer

2) Knowyour team of people

3) Get aGREAT not just good manager

4) Learnto expect crazy ish to happen when money is involved so keep that tight.

5) Get aGREAT not just good accountant.

6) Learnthe mechanic of how an artist gets paid e.g. PRS, MCPS etc.

7) Discipline.If you and your guys sweat to get a deal, how close are you? Can you bedivided? Will a few quid (£100,000 is a few quid at that level) make a manforget his marbles? Ditch his mates? Or are the mates just hanging on? Workthese things out with a SOLID PLAN that everyone knows and can recite almost.Then get to it sun!!!! Peace

UK artist Shucks One Is an Artist, Radio DJ, Youth worker and journalist specialising in hip-hop music and culture.

With this exhibition he presents a unique visual collection celebrating the themes of consciousness, positive attributes and important figures in Classic UK and US Hip-hop culture, discussing its wider implications on modern culture.

Through painting Shucks One has developed a way of expressing and contextualising the history of modern day street music and art. Using a variety of objects as canvasses, such as furniture, clothing, masks and found wood, Shucks One creates a sketchbook, a mix tape way of exhibiting work, going back to the core ethics of street music and art. Using bold colours, pattern reminiscent of tribal fabric prints and ancient symbols Shucks One discusses themes of cultural heritage.

“The term ‘old school’ is often banded around without any real understanding of the underlying themes. With this series of works I intend to explore messages and concepts, not just from hip-hop, but human history as well. It is part history lesson, part hip hop project.”

‘Foundation Rocks’ combines a series of portraits, illustrations and sculpture, capturing the original hip hop mantras of ‘peace, love, and unity; knowledge, wisdom and understanding’, presenting a challenge to the dominating themes of violence, negativity and corporatism which resonate throughout hip-hop today. The project is the artists’ search to rediscover these foundation principles by retracing the history of UK hip hop music and the individuals making it. It is an attempt to cement the originators of UK hip hop as icons for British music fans, who are often more familiar with the originators in the US.

The exhibition is a visual interpretation of interviews Shucks One conducted with hip hop pioneers of the 1980s, whose music influenced a whole generation of young men and women in the UK. The works addresses issues of history, identity and religion.

Shucks One will be donating a percentage of any sales made from the exhibition and will also be holding a raffle on the night of the private view to raise money for the charity WAYout.

WAYout Charity provides arts and media training to disadvantaged and street youth in Sierra Leone. In 2010 it worked with over 600 young people who explored subjects as diverse as street life, HIV and teenage

pregnancy, using music, comedy, soap opera and documentary. Their films have reached audiences in excess of 35,000 people. Users now tell us they want a base. A place where they can write, rehearse,

learn, edit, shoot, show their work or just exchange ideas and support each other. The Hub/ arts centre is the natural next step and is what we are currently fundraising for.

Just yesterday I was watching an interview just did with Westwood and Heavy D and was shocked to find out that he has passed away. Our deepest sympathies go to his cousin Pete Rock and all of his family. I have heard a lot of positive things about him over the years, Heavy D was defined by his positive attitude and giving nature, whether it was his Annual "Nothin' But Love" Mount Vernon Cookout, progressive lyrical content, or his putting on other artists into the industry. (My friend YR used to work at Haagen Dazs in Money Makin' Mount V, and told me he was a regular customer, and that he was a really cool guy.)

Lupe Fiasco To Headline Hip-Hop Panel Commemorating “Lasers” Protest

Lupe Fiasco and The Fiasco Street Team will hold a Hip-Hop discussion panel this Saturday, November 12, at St. Francis College in Brooklyn Heights, New York.
The panel will commemorate the anniversary of the historic “Fiasco Friday” event, where hundreds of fans protested outside Atlantic Records in New York City for the release of Fiasco’s latest release, Lasers.
The goal of event is bring together artists, bloggers and writers, political activists, professors, and fans to consider the current state of Hip-Hop and explore the crossing lines between all mediums.

Recently Lupe Fiasco turned up to the New York "Occupy Wall Street" protest to discuss Worl Trade Centre Building 7, 911 truth and New World Order.

Topics to be discussed include: Hip-Hop as a means for social change, Hip-Hop’s effect on local communities and corporate America, mainstream radio, and other controversial, stimulating topics.
“We feel the history of misogyny and the negative materialistic messages to the youth have devalued Hip-Hop and turned many people against it,” explained Mink. “It’s imperative to speak on these topics and ask hard questions to get hard answers.”
Doors open at 2pm, and the event will run from 3pm until 5pm. Confirmed panelists include Lupe Fiasco, Toni Blackman, Nitty Scott MC, journalist Jay Rodriguez, RapGenius.com creator Byron Hurt, and more.
Tickets are $10, and the event is open to general public. All proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the Horn Of Africa fundraiser.
“We want youth leaders to listen, ask questions, and actively participate in our dialogue to prepare them to discuss these issues with friends and family,” Mink added. “We want the attendees to critically think about Hip-Hop and music and not just accept the songs and messages that come from their radios. Cormega is an MC from Queens Bridge Projects, home of some of the most influential Hip-Hop acts ever. In the mid 80’s Marley Marl and the Juice Crew were dominating the Hip-Hop landscape. What many people don’t know is that Marley recorded many of his classic records in his Apartment in Queensbridge Projects, and many of the Juice Crew members MC Shan, Roxanna Shante, Tragedy and others are from Queensbridge.

Although most people are familiar with the Mega reference in Nas’s song, Cormega’s first time on wax was in 1989, MC Cor aka Cormega as a guest on Legendary Queens Bridge Block Party DJ – DJ Hot Day on the Tuff City released Going Straight Up featuring early Bridge MC Arkim and Shahid

Originally supposed to be a member of the super group The Firm headed by Nas, he found himself replaced by fellow Queens MC Nature, and his is debut album release postponed. His first album The Realness was released in (2001), an experience Mega feels is a blessing in disguise, as it prepared him for his future as an Independent artist.

Mary Jane Hooper; New Orleans ‘Funk Diva’, is one of the most obscure figures in Crescent City’s soul music history. Mary Jane Hooper’s soulful Aretha Franklin-esque vocals can be heard on the two-part ‘I’ve Got What You Need’ track. This track was produced and arranged by the legendary Eddie Bo. For this recording she is backed by the also legendary James Black on the drums.

Mary Jane Hooper is famed for her collaboration with legendary producer Eddie Bo. She originally got her start singing gospel music before crossing over to secular R&B as a backup singer for Lee Dorsey. Ms. Hooper signed to Eddie Bo’s ‘Scram’ label in 1966 and moved on to his Power Label in 1968.

The recording of “I’ve Got What You Need”, which took place in 1969, can be said to be one of the earliest examples of a unique brand of funk that was to emerge from New Orleans over the coming decade.

The original 45 from the initial pressing recently sold for $ 3,300 in the rare records collector market. This is the first time this 45 has been repressed in decades. This version contains the longer original master tape version which was edited down for the original release. ‘I’ve Got What You Need’ has been re-mastered and restored from the original master tapes and is set to be released on November 29, 2011.
