Old To The New Q&A – Ryan Proctor Interviews Lord Finesse
"Lord Finesse is an artist who really needs no introduction. A founding member of the legendary NY-based Diggin’ In The Crates crew, a former affiliate of Ice-T’s Rhyme Syndicate collective and a successful solo act in his own right, the Bronx-bred producer-on-the-mic is considered one of Hip-Hop’s most revered talents, with albums such as his 1990 Wild Pitch debut “Funky Technician” ranked as undisputed classics within rap circles." The Ritzy Brixton is pleased to announce that director and legendary rapper Ice T will be at The Ritzy to take part in a Q&A session following this exclusive screening of SOMETHING FROM NOTHING: THE ART OF RAP (15).
Friday 20 July, 9.45 doors, 10.00 prompt start
Directors: Ice T, Andy Baybutt. UK/USA 2012. 112 mins.
This is a feature-length performance documentary about the runaway juggernaut that is Rap music. At the wheel of this unstoppable beast is the film's director and interviewer Ice T. Taking us on a deeply personal journey, Ice-T uncovers how this music of the street has grown to dominate the world. Along the way he meets a whole spectrum of Hip-Hop talent, from founders to new faces to global superstars like Eminem, Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg and Kanye West. He exposes the roots and history of Rap and then, through meeting many of its most famous protagonists, studies the living mechanism of the music to reveal 'The Art of Rap'. This extraordinary film features unique performances from the entire cast, without resorting to archive matter.

Visually luscious and drenched with the big beats of classic cuts and freestyle rhyming by some of the masters of the music, SOMETHING FROM NOTHING: THE ART OF RAP is a performance documentary about the runaway juggernaut that is hip-hop. At the wheel of this unstoppable beast is Ice-T who with co-director Andy Baybut takes us on a personal journey into the asphalt roots of the music that saved his life.

Ice-T travels from coast to coast, engaging intimately with the likes of Afrika Bambaataa, Chuck D, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Grandmaster Caz, Ice Cube, KRS-One, Nas, Run-DMC, Snoop Dogg and Yasiin Bey formerly known as Mos Def. What emerges is a mighty soul tribute to the original American art form that brought poetry to a new generation.

9.00pm – Live performances from Ice-T, Chuck D, Melle Mel & Raekwon

Planet Rock -The Story of Hip-hop & The Crack Generation Film

Planet Rock -The Story of Hip-hop & The Crack Generation Film
Watch the film here at the excellent www.hiphopisread.com
Very interesting break down of Crack Cocaines role in Hip-Hop's progression/regression, and the hysteria taken advantage for political ends in the 80's and early 90's. Film features Snoop, B-real, Pepa, nar Ice-T, Too Short and Wu-Tang and more. It does focus more on Crack and less on the music, but very interesting and revealing. Although it is unfortunate that the films title "Planet Rock" might confuse some people into thinking that there is a link between the 1982 song by The Zulu Nation's Afrika Bambaataa & the Soulsonic Force and the Drug trade, which there is not.

RARE Afrika Islam 1990 Era U.S. T.V. Interview *Extremely Rare Kool Skool Exclusive*

More obscure stuff from the Kool Skool vaults, Afrika Islam "The Son of Afrika Bambaataa", best known as a Zulu Nation Sound System DJ in the Bronx Park Jams, and as one of the first Hip-Hop radio mix show DJs on his Zulu Beat Show, on 105.9 WHBI in New York. In the late 80's he went to L.A. as a emissary of Afrika Bambaataa and the Universal Zulu Nation to set up a Zulu Chapter there, and was involved in the legendary United Nations Hip-Hop Club in L.A. He is known for co-producing much of Ice-T's early music and member of his Rhyme Syndicate, and is today sill a touring DJ.
