SHIRT KINGS: PIONEERS OF HIP HOP FASHION - A new Dokument Press book by Edwin PHADE Sacasa & Alan KET Foreword by MC Serch

A new book by Edwin PHADE Sacasa and Alan KET

Foreword by MC Serch

LL reppin Farmers Blvd!
"Shirt Kings brought the hip hop element into the clothes for real and integrated it, and it was the first time I saw hip hop culture completely merged with clothing."
- LL Cool J

Jamaica, Queens, New York in the mid 1980s. Rappers and hip hop fans came from all over the city to get their own customized t-shirt by The Mighty Shirt Kings. The style traveled all over the world through record covers and music videos, and the Shirt Kings designs soon became synonymous with hip hop and the
culture of making something out of nothing.

Shirt Kings "Strictly Buisness"

SHIRT KINGS: PIONEERS OF HIP HOP FASHION looks at the early days of urban fashion through the lens of the pioneering group of artists known as the Shirt Kings. By adapting the graffiti skills from the trains and spray cans to shirts and airbrush they created a new look for a new generation. At the same time they laid down the ground for the streetwear industry of today. Edwin PHADE Sacasa is a founding artist of the group and it is through his archives that we are transported to the 1980s in New York City where the fashion was loud, colorful, and filled with cartoon imagery; but not just any cartoon imagery for the cartoons where urbanized. Mickey Mouse with a Fila suit, Casper the Friendly Ghost with gold teeth and Pink Panther with gold chains.

The Shirt Kings with a young MC Search (3rd Bass) who also writes the books forward

People from across the city made their way to Jamaica, Queens to a small shopping mall known as the Coliseum where you could easily bump into the biggest names in hip hop of the day. From DJ Red Alert to LL Cool J to Big Daddy Kane to Mike Tyson ˆ they all had to have their Shirt Kings designs.

SHIRT KINGS: PIONEERS OF HIP HOP FASHION chronicles the art, the styles, and the people who where loyal supporters of the Shirt Kings, and takes us on a trip down memory lane to when customization and art reigned supreme in New York City.

The Kool Skool's Top 14 Concept Songs - The Art Of Storytelling

Nas - I Gave You Power

The Kool Skool's Top 10 Concept Songs

Hip-Hop & Lyrics are obviously the back bone of Hip-Hop Culture but the Concept song is only to be attempted by True Lyricists! A concept song is a song that has a unified theme or story running through it. Due to the changing formats and reliance on the Singles charts, the Concept song became less popular, during the CD singles era, A&R's would allow less leeway for the Artist to "waste" tracks on tracks that aren't "Bangers". However, due to the Independence of the Internet, Artists have a greater opportunity to explore more creative themes and ideas on songs. This is not a complete list, and in no particular order, but a selection of some of the most powerful examples in our opinion. Please feel free to add your own in the comments sections. Enjoy!

or watch them all as a Playlist HERE

Nas - I Gave You Power (1996)
In this song from Nas's "It Was Written" Album he tells the story from the 1st Person perspective of a Ghetto Gun, and how he is manipulated to commit different crimes. This song is not a glorification of violence, but a explanation of how gun crime works in Urban America, it could also be looked at as a metaphor for the Commercialization of Hip-Hop by Corporate Companies.

Sadat X - The Daily News (2005)
Off of Sadat X's 3rd solo album, Experience & Education, Sadat, while reading a newspaper, turns headlines and editorial stories into a coherant almost freestyle Rhyme. ILL! Sadat is one of Hip-Hop's hardest working MC's working with most of Hip-Hop's greats, a true lyricist!

Slick Rick - "Children's Story" (1989)
"Children's Story" is a song by London-born American Hip-Hop artist Slick Rick, from his album "The Great Adventures of Slick Rick". In most peoples opinion, one of the 1st, if not the greatest story Rhymer, Rhyme of all time!

Heltah Skeltah - Therapy (1996)
This song by Brooklyn duo Rock and Ruck (now known as Sean Price) of Boot Camp Clik) is a clever back and forth conversation between the two, one as a Mental Health Patient and a Doctor, almost a modern re-make of U.T.F.O's Split Personality below.

3rd Bass - Problem Child (1991)
MC SerchPrime Minister Pete Nice, and later DJ Richie Rich featured "Problem Child" on their second Album Derelicts of Dialect. It is a powerful song describing the trials of children who are forced to grow up to quickly. This album really showed the groups progression, and it was a true shame they never released another album together, although they both went on to release solid solo albums. The album is full of skitz, and a good example is the funny "Al'z A-B-Cee'z"an imaginary song by DJ Richie Rich's Dad.

Lupe Fiasco - Little Weapon (2007)
Lupe Fiasco is really one of the best modern MC's using proper concepts in his Music and albums. Little Weapon is a stand out track, from his excellent Concept album The Kool. Little Weapon discusses the concept of Child Soldiers, in many different countries and situations, Lupe is a thinking man's MC, and and the song deals with very sophisticated issues.

Masta Ace feat Jean Grae - Soda & Soap
Masta Ace is in my opinion one of the most underrated MC's, consistanly dropping classic albums and songs. Masta Ace links up with dope Femcee Jean Grae to record a mind blowing concept song making story raps out of the Brand names of Soft Drinks and Soap. Genius. Masta Ace is a master of Concept Albums and songs, if you haven't checked the albums Disposable Arts" (2001) which features "Unfriendly Game" a American Football ode to Large Professor and Main Sources "A Freindly Game Of Baseball" and "A Long Hot Summer" (2004) your missing out!

Papoose - Alphabetical slaughter Z to A (Part 2)
The most recent edition of Papoose's REDICULOUS alphabetical song needs to be heard to be believed! Anyone who follows The Kool Skool know that in our opinion Pap is the best MC out there hands down! If you don't know him check herePapoose - Alphabet Slaughter Part 1 (1999) check the DUMB NICE Lyrics here!!!

U.T.F.O. - Split personality
Brooklyn based U.T.F.O. originally dancers for Whodini, Kangol Kid, the Educated Rapper (EMD), Doctor Ice and Mix Master Ice came together and released several albums. This comedy track is about a person with a Split Personality complex, with Doc Ice playing his famous and hilarious "Dread Doc" character. Doctor Ice also released his own slept on solo album with a Anti "Desert Storm" song "I Ain't Going".

Organized Konfusion - Stray Bullet (1994)
Prince Poetry & Pharoahe Monch were Organized Konfusion, "Stay Bullet" was on the Hollywood Basic album Stress: The Extinction Agenda. It like the later "I Gave You Power" by fellow Queens native Nas, is a incredible story song told from the perspective of  a bullet. One of the best examples of a Concept song.

Mr Len (feat. Jean Grae) - Taco Day (2001)
Jean Grae again this time guesting on Mr. Len's Album ‎"Pity The Fool" where she examines the psychology of a prom queen high school shooter on an intense 9 minute track. Jean Grae is without a doubt one of the top Female MCs ever.

Geto Boys - My Mind Playing Tricks On Me (1991)
Texas group The Geto Boys are one of the Gangsta Rap era's most slept on greats, the media always tried to portray the genre as ignorant and violent, but Geto Boys, although dipped in Violence and had offensive lyrics, expressed an extremely intelligent message and dealt with serious issues, from the Anti-War "F**k A War", to "Damn It Feels Good To Be A Gangsta", and more. "My Minds Playing Tricks On Me" is three different mens battle with Paranoia, a Hip-Hop Classic.

Common - I Used To Love H.E.R
This song "I Used to Love H(earing) E(very) R(hyme) by Common (then known as Common Sense), is an open love letter to Hip-Hop and a protest to the negative aspects that were so promoted by Corperate Music Labels. It was released on the 1994 album Resurrection, reintroduced Common to a whole new audience as a more mature artist, and made this an instant classic, and figure head for the early 90's return to true Hip-Hop culture. More on this song and Common can be found here

Hard Knocks - Dirty Cop Named Harry - (1992)
Bronx Representers Hard Knocks, consisting of Hardhead and DJ Stoneface released Dirty Cop Named Harry on their only album "School of Hard Knocks" on Wild Pitch Records. This incredibly slept-on, solid album is packed full of Conscious Concept songs, and it was a shame they never released any more music.

The High Profile Demise of Mobb Deep

The High Profile Demise of Mobb Deep has been played out on Shock Jock Hip-Hop Radio shows, youtube channels and  blogs for quite some time now. Both members of Mobb Deep have been facing personal issues, alleged Alcoholism, Prison Time, Label woes, Solo venture competition, "Hacked Twitter Accounts", Rumours, Denials and more.

Prodigy & Havoc came together as the group Mobb Deep started while students at LaGuardia High School for Preforming Arts in the early 90's and released their 1st album Juvenile Hell much of which was produced by DJ Premier and Large Professor. Their second Album The Infamous became a East Coast Classic, at a time when West Coast Rap was on top, embroiling them in the middle of the media fuelled so-called "East Coast/West Coast Beef".

Mobb Deep, Capone-N-Noreaga & Tragedy Khadafi - LA LA (Kuwait Mix)

They featured as guests on Marley Marl's remix of Capone-N-Noreaga's  - LA LA (Kuwait Mix) alongside legendary Queensbridge MC - Tragedy Khadafi, which was one of the most serious West Coast diss records of that period.

Mobb Deep ft. Cormega - Let Nothin Die [Unreleased]

Since 1993 they have released 7 albums, with strong production by some of the best beatsmiths Premier, Pete Rock, Alchemist and more, and collaborated with some of Hip-Hop's best. As successful artists in their own rights; Havoc as a producer for many of Hip-Hop greats; Method ManEminemNasFoxy BrownOnyxO.G.C.The Notorious B.I.G.JadakissStyles PGameDiddyLL Cool JBig NoydTermanologyCapone-N-Noreaga, Prodigy's solo work and Mobb Deep; and Prodigy releasing his 3 part H.N.I.C. series.

Comedy Mobb Deep "Blood Money" cover from http://nahright.com/news/2006/05/02/blood-money-in-stores-today

In 2005 Mobb Deep signed to 50 Cent's G-Unit records despite the fact that 50 Cent dissed them on "Piggy Bank", many die-hard Mobb fans were critical of the move, although in late 2009, Mobb Deep were released from their contract. It was during this period that Prodigy became a regular on hood youtube video channels, out spokenly critical of many rappers, and created beef for the group. Prodigy was arrested on a Gun Charge and asserted that the "Hip-Hop Police" had offered a deal if he would set up 50 Cent, which he allegedly refused.

In the months leading up to his Prison term, he released some of his best music, putting him in a league with modern Political MC's like Immortal Technique, and while in Prison, he released Phone Time (Welcome To State Prison), and a 5 page letter accusing Jay-Z of being an Illuminati Puppet, and showed his support for Afrika Bambaataa and Incarcerated Religious Leader Dr. Malachi Z York.

During his Prison stretch, Prodigy wrote his now "Infamous" book My Infamous Life: The Autobiography of Mobb Deep's Prodigy, where he discusses events in his life. While revealing his life story, he has been widely accused of "Dry Snitching" on many Queensbridge and Hip-Hop artists, and the release saw a slew of back and fourths between Prodigy and Queens Rappers and Crime figures. All of this may have proved fatal to the Mobb Deep relationship, as Havoc is noticeably not openly involved in the over hyped tit for tat media circus.

Recently the Hip-Hop Radio Shock Jocks have been having a feeding frenzy over rumours of a very personal Mobb split, much of which features in the videos below. We at The Kool Skool do not get joy over this situation, and will not add to it. Unfortunately, it seems that "the Rap Industry" is more focused on fuelling Rap Beefs and Gossip, than celebrating what this industry is actually about - Music. All there is to be said is that Mobb Deep are a legendary Group, and like Groups, they fall out, and all you can do is hope they can sort out their differences, or wish them luck on their respective solo careers, and celebrate almost 20 years of dope music.

Havoc - Separated (Real From The Fake)

In this second clip from his sit-down with AllHipHop, Havoc speaks on the shots he took at P on “Same Shit, Different Day”, the allegations about P made by his cousin Ferg Brim and the decline of his relationship with his longtime partner.

***Listen HERE***
***Alternative Mixcloud Link HERE***

Cormega is an MC from Queens Bridge Projects, home of some of the most influential Hip-Hop acts ever. In the mid 80’s Marley Marl and the Juice Crew were dominating the Hip-Hop landscape. What many people don’t know is that Marley recorded many of his classic records in his Apartment in Queensbridge Projects, and many of the Juice Crew members MC Shan, Roxanna Shante, Tragedy and others are from Queensbridge.

Although most people are familiar with the Mega reference in Nas’s song, Cormega’s first time on wax was in 1989, MC Cor aka Cormega as a guest on Legendary Queens Bridge Block Party DJ – DJ Hot Day on the Tuff City released Going Straight Up featuring early Bridge MC Arkim and Shahid

Originally supposed to be a member of the super group The Firm headed by Nas, he found himself replaced by fellow Queens MC Nature, and his is debut album release postponed. His first album The Realness was released in (2001), an experience Mega feels is a blessing in disguise, as it prepared him for his future as an Independent artist.

The show is exclusive to UK Hip-Hop Culture Station Sensei.fm

For much of the early 90’s, as Nas and Mobb Deep were blowing up, Cormega was incarcerated. Cormega should be known alongside the mid 90’s next generation of new talent, OC, Keith Murray, Mic Geronimo, AZ, Nas, Mobb Deep and others who succeeded in bringing back NY flavoured Street Stories and sophisticated rhymes.

Shucks One ID Presents both Classic, Rare Tracks and meaningful conversation with Queens Vet Cormega

The Show features rare old & new tracks by Cormega, Kool Sphere, Capone & Noreaga CNN, Blaq Poet, DJ Premier, MC Eight, Beatnuts, AZ, Al-Tariq (Fashion), DJ Hot Day, Arkim, Kool G Rap, Lord Finesse, Tragedy Khadafi, De La Soul, Black Sheep, A Tribe Called Quest, Mobb Deep, Big L, Mic Geronimo, MOP, Sadat X, Royal Flush, Fabulous, Freddy Foxx, Large Professor, Nas and more.
